Which ACOTAR court are you?
Seven courts, seven kinds of magic, and one of them was waiting for you the day you were born. This ACOTAR quiz skips the personality questions and asks the sky instead: put in your birth date and it works out where the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars really were, then lets your chart choose your court, what kind of fae you'd be, your two powers, your role at court and the creature you'd get the better of. If you know your Moon and rising sign, add them for a sharper answer. Then add your person's birthday to see if you're mates.
Don't know your Moon or rising? Your free chart shows both. The quiz works without them.
It's spoiler-free. The courts here are the setting and the mood of the series, nothing that gives away the story, including the new book.
How your chart picks a court
Every zodiac sign leans toward one court and shares a little with a second. Your placements each cast a vote for the sign they sit in. Your Sun counts most, because it's the core of who you are, and so does your Moon if you add it. Your rising sign and Venus count a little less, Mercury and Mars a little less again. The court with the most votes is yours, and the runner-up is the streak of another court you carry with you.
That's why two people with the same Sun sign can land in different courts. A Leo with Venus and Mars in Virgo can end up in the Day Court rather than the Summer Court, because more of their chart sits in the curious, careful signs.
If a planet changed sign on your birthday, the quiz can't tell which side of the change you were born on, so it splits that vote between both signs. Your full chart uses your birth time and settles it.
The seven courts
The Night Court is starlight, dreams and fierce loyalty. It draws the deep, intuitive signs: Scorpio and Pisces lean here, and Cancer and Capricorn share in it.
The Day Court is sunlight, learning and great libraries. Gemini and Virgo, the signs ruled by Mercury, lean here, and Leo shares its brightness.
The Dawn Court is first light, healing and fresh starts. Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, and Aquarius, the sign of new ideas, lean here, and Virgo shares its gift for mending things.
The Spring Court is blossom, music and growing things. Taurus leans here, and Aries, Gemini and Libra share in it.
The Summer Court is the sea, open doors and a generous heart. Cancer and Leo lean here, and Taurus shares its love of the good things in life.
The Autumn Court is fire, gold forests and a wild spirit. Libra and Sagittarius lean here, and Scorpio shares its intensity.
The Winter Court is snow, quiet strength and a steady hand. Capricorn leans here, and the signs either side of it, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces, share in it.
Which sign leans which court
| Sign | Leans | Shares with |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Dawn Court | Spring Court |
| Taurus | Spring Court | Summer Court |
| Gemini | Day Court | Spring Court |
| Cancer | Summer Court | Night Court |
| Leo | Summer Court | Day Court |
| Virgo | Day Court | Dawn Court |
| Libra | Autumn Court | Spring Court |
| Scorpio | Night Court | Autumn Court |
| Sagittarius | Autumn Court | Winter Court |
| Capricorn | Winter Court | Night Court |
| Aquarius | Dawn Court | Winter Court |
| Pisces | Night Court | Winter Court |
The seasonal courts follow the signs' own seasons in the northern year: Taurus in full spring, Cancer and Leo in high summer, Libra and Sagittarius in autumn, Capricorn in deep winter. The three solar courts follow what the signs are for: the Night Court takes the dreamers, the Day Court the thinkers, the Dawn Court the starters and healers.
Your kind of fae
Most charts come out High Fae: graceful, ageless and strong in magic. Charts with warrior blood come out Illyrian, with wings. That blood comes from Mars, the planet of drive and courage. Mars in a fire sign (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius) counts two points, and Mars in Scorpio or Capricorn, where it is also strong, counts one and a half. A Sun or rising sign in Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Scorpio or Capricorn adds a point, and so does a Moon in a fire sign. Two points and you have wings, or two and a half if you've added your rising sign, since it can add a point of its own. About a third of birthdays do.
Illyrians aren't High Fae, and the High Lords and Ladies are. So when a chart comes out Illyrian and its role comes out High Lord or Lady, it gets the rarest kind of all: half High Fae, half Illyrian, with High Fae power and Illyrian wings. About one birthday in fourteen.
Illyrians come from the mountains of the Night Court. So when a winged chart picks any other court, you crossed courts: Night-born, and sworn to the court your chart chose. A Summer Court Illyrian is Night-born, Summer-sworn.
Your powers
Your powers listen most to your Moon, the planet of your inner life, then your Sun, Venus and Mars, with Mercury and your rising sign adding a little. Every sign leans one power and shares with a second, and your two strongest are yours.
| Sign | Leans | Shares with |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Shields | Flame |
| Taurus | Growing things | Glamour |
| Gemini | Winnowing | Spell-cleaving |
| Cancer | Water-shaping | Healing |
| Leo | Light | Flame |
| Virgo | Healing | Growing things |
| Libra | Glamour | Winnowing |
| Scorpio | Shadows | Daemati |
| Sagittarius | Flame | Winnowing |
| Capricorn | Frost | Shields |
| Aquarius | Spell-cleaving | Frost |
| Pisces | Daemati | Water-shaping |
A daemati can slip into minds and dreams. Winnowing is stepping from one place to another in a heartbeat. Spell-cleaving is seeing how a spell was made and pulling it apart. The rest do what they say.
Your role at court
Your role is how you act in the world, so it listens most to your Sun and rising sign, then Mercury and Mars, with Venus and the Moon adding a little.
| Sign | Leans | Shares with |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | General | High Lord or Lady |
| Taurus | Court artist | Healer |
| Gemini | Emissary | Spymaster |
| Cancer | Healer | Seer |
| Leo | High Lord or Lady | Court artist |
| Virgo | Keeper of the library | Healer |
| Libra | Emissary | Court artist |
| Scorpio | Spymaster | Seer |
| Sagittarius | General | Keeper of the library |
| Capricorn | High Lord or Lady | General |
| Aquarius | Keeper of the library | Emissary |
| Pisces | Seer | Court artist |
Your creature
The books are full of creatures, and this isn't about which one you are. It's the one you'd get the better of. That's about how you face a challenge, so it listens to your Mars sign, with your Sun and rising sign breaking a tie when Mars changed sign on your birthday.
| Mars sign | Your creature |
|---|---|
| Aries | The Bogge wouldn’t scare you |
| Taurus | You’d keep your nerve with the Weaver |
| Gemini | You’d catch the Suriel |
| Cancer | The water-wraiths would be in your debt |
| Leo | The Bogge wouldn’t scare you |
| Virgo | You’d catch the Suriel |
| Libra | You’d out-bargain the Bone Carver |
| Scorpio | The puca couldn’t fool you |
| Sagittarius | You’d outrun the naga |
| Capricorn | You’d outwit the Middengard Wyrm |
| Aquarius | You’d out-bargain the Bone Carver |
| Pisces | The water-wraiths would be in your debt |
Are you mates?
Add someone's birthday and the quiz compares your two charts sign by sign. It looks at desire first: your Venus with their Mars, and your Mars with their Venus. If you add your Moons, it looks at your Sun with their Moon and the other way round, the oldest sign of a deep bond. Then it compares like with like: Suns, Moons, Mercurys, Venus and Mars.
Planets in the same sign, the same element or two friendly signs apart pull you closer. Signs at right angles strike sparks, and opposite signs do both: they attract and they push. From that, every pair gets one of four bonds, and none of them is a bad answer:
- Mates: desire and the lights line up between you, and it feels like recognising each other.
- Enemies to lovers: more sparks than ease, with real desire under the friction.
- Friends to lovers: your minds or your Suns get along easily, and love grows out of that.
- Slow burn: you're different enough to keep surprising each other, and closeness is earned.
Questions
Is this an official ACOTAR quiz?
No. It's fan-made by Pluto Garden for readers of Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses series, and isn't affiliated with Sarah J. Maas, Bloomsbury or the publishers.
Does it have spoilers for A Court of Splintered Harmony?
No. The quiz and this page only use the courts' setting and mood, nothing from the plot of any book in the series, the new one included.
Why didn't I get the court my Sun sign leans?
Your Sun is the biggest vote your birth date gives, but it isn't the whole chart. When your Venus, Mercury and Mars sit together in signs that lean another court, they can outvote it. Adding your Moon and rising sign often changes the answer too, because the Moon counts as much as the Sun.
Can I be Night Court without being a Scorpio or Pisces?
Yes. A Scorpio or Pisces Moon counts as much as a Sun there, and Cancer and Capricorn placements add to the Night Court as well. Plenty of Night Court charts have no Scorpio or Pisces Sun at all.
Is the mate check real synastry?
It's a light version. Full synastry compares the exact degrees of two whole charts, houses included. The mate check compares signs, which is all a birth date can give, so treat it as a fun first look. Your full chart on Pluto Garden shows your exact placements.
Is High Fae better than Illyrian?
Not here. They're different kinds of magic, and the quiz doesn't rank them. Every kind, court, power and role is written as a strength.
Do I need my birth time?
No. The Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars only need your birth date. The Moon and rising sign need your birth time and place, which is why they're optional here. Your free chart on Pluto Garden works both out.
Where do the planet positions come from?
From NASA JPL's DE440 planetary data, the same numbers Pluto Garden uses to draw every chart. The sign tables cover every day from 1900 to 2100.
